Thayer Scale, is seeking a great candidate to join our customer-centric, fast-paced sales team. Thayer Scale, a global leader in the design and manufacture of process measurement and control equipment has an opening for a SALES APPLICATION ENGINEER.

GENERAL SUMMARY
In this role you will support the activities of the field sales and marketing teams. Key responsibilities include directly supporting the field sales team in the creation of proposals, quotations and other selling-related communication. In addition, you will work closely with engineering to communicate customer’s technical requirements, and ensure tight alignment between our project engineers and the sales team. You should have a strong technical background in the areas of mechanical systems, instrumentation and production equipment. Prior sales experience is desirable, but not a requirement. In addition, you should have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and a strong desire to deliver customer satisfaction in a fast-paced environment. Some overnight travel to customer facilities and trade-shows is required. This position reports directly to the VP of Sales and provides a great opportunity to step into a Field Sales or Product Management role in the near future.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works with Regional Sales Managers to develop proposals for new equipment, equipment upgrades & re-rates in a timely manner. Includes frequent direct contact with customers and prospects to gather appropriate application information.
  • When necessary, directly interface with suppliers of subsystems and components to determine cost and lead-time information for proposals that include custom-engineered content.
  • Timely follow-up on incoming leads (e-mail, website and phone), capturing relevant information on CRM system and sharing details with appropriate team-members.
  • Follow-up on open proposals, and maintain relevant information in CRM system to rate and prioritize sales opportunities, and provide sales intelligence to other team members.
  • Review customer technical specifications included in Request for Quotation (RFQ) and work with engineering and sales resources to determine where exceptions must be taken. Complete any required technical fields of proposal data sheets.
  • Back up to Regional Managers when they are out of the office or otherwise engaged. Take phone calls from customers, address requests and issues where possible and relay appropriate information.
  • When practical assist customer in solving problems which may arise with Thayer equipment, informing the Sales Manager, Service Manager and Engineering Manager in writing. Otherwise place customer directly in the hands on the Service Manager.
  • When required, work with engineering department to obtain additional information needed to process Sales Orders.
  • Work closely with test lab to make sure customer product tests are being scheduled and completed on time.
  • Maintain customer profiles and customer files in company CRM system.
  • When required, assist Sales Manager in setting up and handling Trade Shows

OTHER REQUIRED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

When required, provide assistance to other company staff in completion of their daily duties.
Respond to emergency situations.
Other company related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Background in process equipment, bulk powder material handling, process controls, weighing systems or the feeder industry a strong plus.
Previous sales experience or training preferred.
Ability to understand lean business principles and apply them in the sales process.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in a technical engineering field, degree in mechanical or electrical engineering preferred.
Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
Strong customer orientation, problem solving and decision-making abilities.
Demonstrated sense of urgency for customer support and follow up.
Demonstrated contract negotiation, preferably in a technical capacity.
Intermediate computer skills, including but not limited to CRM, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook PhotoShop, AutoCad or Solidworks a plus.
Strong attention to detail.
